Recently, a coatable polarizer as a new technology has been investigated. This new technology is based on the mixture of dichroic dyes and reactive mesogen or just liquid crystalline material. The coatable polarizer offers numerous advantages over a conventional polarizer film as it can reduce thickness and weight, be on the inside of the cell (in-cell), and be also patterned. This ultra-thin coatable polarizer film is promising for the application in high performance LCD and flexible displays. In this work we utilize the highly ordered smectic guest host system to fabricate the coatable polarizer. We synthesized a novel smectic phase reactive liquid crystalline mixed with dichroic dye to prepare the guest-host mixture, after fabricated the thin coatable polarizer the in-situ polymerization was carried out under UV lamp. The highly ordered smectic phase was confirmed by DSC and POM. The coatable polarizer properties were studied by POM and polarized UV-Vis spectroscopy. |
