Drilling with long pipelines is one of well-known method for harvesting natural gas from deep sea. However, the contact with methane and seawater while transporting natural gases in flowlines induces methane hydrate formation that causes blockage of flowlines. To prevent the hydrate formation, poly(t-butylacrylamide-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) [P(tBAAm-co-NIPAAm)] was tested as a kinetic hydrate inhibitor, one of the low dosage hydrate inhibitor. P(tBAAm-co-NIPAAm) was synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. P(tBAAm-co-NIPAAm) was characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography. Performance of P(tBAAm-co-NIPAAm) was investigated in a high pressure autoclave reactor system.
