Electrochemical Reduction of Uranium Oxides in a LiCl-Li2O Molten Salt |

The problem of accumulating spent fuel from current PWR (pressurized water reactor) nuclear power plants which is mainly composed of uranium oxides should be addressed for sustainable development of nuclear energy. One of the most promising solution is to reduced the spent oxide fuel and recycle it as metal fuel for a fast neutron reactor. The reduction of uranium oxides in a LiCl-Li2O molten salt at 650 oC will be discussed in the Symposium. The reaction mechanism based on the catalytic EC will be presented. The reduction method applied in this study can be used for the mass production of different kinds of reactive metals. |
