Pluronics are nontoxic poly(ethylene oxide)-(polypropylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymers which form thermoreversible gels at high concentrations. These gels have received increasing attention over many years as drug delivery systems for topical, transdermal, ophthalmic, and implantable applications and biomaterials. In particular, Pluronic F127 has been most widely used as a proper block copolymer in pharmaceutical systems. For sol-gel transition in specific temperature and further modification, we synthesized functional Pluronic derivatives such as Pluronic-META (4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic anhydride). The chemical structures of the Pluronic-META copolymers having functional anhydride group were analyzed by FTIR, GPC, and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonances. Sol-gel transition and particle size of the resulting Pluronic-META copolymers were characterized by tube tilting method (tilted the vial with 90˚ for 10 minutes) and light scattering, respectively. |
