We demonstrate that an incorporation of small amount of nanocarbon materials can significantly improve the performance of commercial PA membranes. We employed amine-functionalized graphene oxides (a-GO) in order to achieve the good dispersion within PA layers and to provide the ion rejection functionality. Nanocomposite membranes containing a-GOs were prepared by interfacial polymerization. After treating these membranes with NaOCl, it was observed that the ion rejections were remarkably improved, while the permeate fluxes were as high as the pristine PA membranes. The enhanced ion rejection is attributed to a-GOs at the top surface that are chemically inert and possess highly charged amine groups, while the rest of PA layers are damaged by NaOCl treatment, allowing the high throughput of water. Based on these results, it can be suggested that the chemical resistance of PA membranes can be significantly improved by our simple method, addition of functionalized nanocarbon materials. |
