In this work, polypyrrole(PPy)/graphene oxide(GO) composites were fabricated in the presence of GO and pyrrole monomer using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant, and their electrorheological (ER) properties under an applied electric field were examined. Chemical structure, morphology and size of the synthesized materials were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. These conducting polymer composites can be used as a dispersed phase in silicone oil for an ER fluid, and its ER behavior was measured using a rotational rheometer under external electric fields. Results showed that the shear yield stress of the composite was lower than that of a suspension containing conventional granular PPy at the same electric field strengths. Granular PPy and composite suspension showed Bingham flow behavior equally. The ER response was further analyzed based on their dielectric data. |
