Synthesis of Photosensitive Polyimide Having Cinnamate Side Chain and Its Photoalignment Property |

A new photosensitive polyimide having cinnamate side chain (CNPI) was synthesized and its photoaligning of nematic liquid crystal was investigated by using linearly polarized UV light (LPUVL). Reactive chloromethylated polyimide (CMPI) was firstly synthesized by the chloromethylation of soluble polyimide prepared from 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylether (ODA). Then, CMPI was further modified by cinnamate derivatives to synthesize photosensitive polyimide having cinnamate side chains (CNPI). The chemical structure of CNPI was characterized by 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies. Thermal behavior of CNPI was determined by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The photosensitivity of CNPI was investigated with UV spectroscopic method. CNPI films exposed with LPUVL successfully induced the alignment of liquid crystal, which was evidenced by cross-polarized optical microscope and pretilt angle measurement of LC cells fabricated with CNPI photoaligned film. Photoaligning characteristics were compared and discussed in terms of polymer structures. |
