Selective binding of chemical ionic species by molecular recognition can lead to host environmental perturbation. Fluoroionophores transduce ion concentrations into measurable signals and thus the interest on such fluoroionophores are increasing substantially. Recently specific detection of inorganic anions and metal cations has been focused because of their important roles in biological, industrial, or environmental process. A new fluorescent chemosensor, polyhydroxybenzoxazole, was synthesized via Suzuki coupling reaction. The polymer is attractive because of the possible use of their unique excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) property. Accordingly, we studied the optical properties of the corresponding polymer. Particularly the ability to coordinate to ions in solutions was investigated and fluoride anion was found to be most effective in controlling optical behavior of the synthesized polymer.
