Polyhydroxyamides(PHAs) having poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether(MPEG, n=7, 11, 16, 24) and/or dimethylphenoxy pendant group were synthesized by polycondensation reaction at low temperature. PHAs were converted to polybenzoxazoles (PBOs) by thermal cyclization reaction. These polymers were studied by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, TGA, DMTA, and X-ray. Solubility of the polymer with a higher n value was increased, especially the polymer having n=24 was soluble or partially soluble in ethanol, methanol, and H2O, but the PBOs were nearly insoluble in a variety of solvents.
