The proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been noticed as the promising power sources. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the key component of PEMFC. Our group has developed flexible side-chain-type highly sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether sulfone)s electrolyte membranes. Highly sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether sulfone)s are named as densely sulfonated. They show high water uptake and proton conductivity. However, high swelling cause low mechanical property of the membrane. The position change of sulfonic acid groups can improve chemical stability of the membrane. Also, vander waals forces, which is formed by flexible alkyl chain, act as crosslinking, enhancing the physical properties of the obtained membranes. Synthesis and properties of the newly-prepared polymer electrolyte membranes will be discussed in detail. |
