제목 Destructive Interference between Molecular and Form Birefringence in a Semicrystalliine Block Copolymer
초록 Abstract
Two different types of optical anisotropy: molecular and form birefringence were investigated in a poly (ethylene-b-ethylene-alt-propylene-b-styrene) semicrystalline terblock copolymer. The molecular birefringence originated from the anisotropic crystalline structure of poly(ethylene) destructively interacts with the form birefringence resulted from uniaxially oriented cylindrical poly(styrene) microdomains. The positive form birefringence above the melting temperature of the polyethylene was transformed into a negative birefringence upon the crystallization of the polyethylene block. At a point where these two types of birefringence destructively interfered each other, the block copolymer showed optically isotropic behavior, leading to darkness under crossed polarizers. The competition between different birefringences was explained using a simple geometric composite model. The materials with both molecular and form birefringence are potentially useful as a temperature sensor optically manipulated.
