A controlled modification of vegetable oil based polyols for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is presented. Thiol-ene reactions of OH containing thiol compounds with castor oil and soybean oil were performed under mild condition by using UV light to introduce primary hydroxyl groups. The efficiencies of the reactions were adjusted by controlling experimental parameters such as thiol/ene ratio, temperature and reaction time. TPUs were prepared from the polyols and their properties were studied, including thermal and mechanical properties.
