Lignin,a second largest component in cellular walls of plants, has been synthesized from Monolignol in large quantities. Although it could be available in applications such as economic biofuels and high quality carbon fibers, however, industrially available lignin has failed to deliver the desired properties of carbonized fiber primarily due to its low molecular weight. It is brittle and weak as spun-fibers. In this presentation, carbon fiber precursors based on lignin were synthesized by various methods. First, the carbon fiber precursors were synthesized by direct grafting reaction of polyacrylonitrile onto lignin by williamson etherification. Second, the carbon fiber precursors were synthesized by atom transfer polymerization of PAN. The resulting carbon fiber precursors were confirmed by spectroscopic methods and thermal analysis and showed improved physical properties. Therefore, the carbon fiber precursors based on lignin may have applications for economical carbon fibers precursors. |
