The electrolyte membranes for alkaline water electrolysis are required to have a low resistance loss, high anion conductivity and good durability. In order to satisfy these requirements and overcome disadvantages of conventional quaternary ammonium (QA) exchange membranes which have low chemical stability, thus degrading the performance of the electrolyte membrane, Poly(acrylene ether) ketone (PAEK) with 1-(3- aminopropyl)-imidazole (API) has been synthesized for AEM. The conductivity increases with increasing molar ratio of API. The membrane with API 1.5 equiv. displays the highest conductivity. All membranes show good chemical as well as thermal stability up to 250 oC. In term of chemical stability, PAEK - APIs show lower ion exchange capacity (IEC) reduction rate than the PAEK-QA and Fumasep FAA-3. From the electrolytic test, PAEK-APIs show better performance than Fumasep FAA-3, confirming that it is a suitable AEM for water electrolysis. |
