Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a ubiquitous, biodegradable, biocompatible, and linear polysaccharide in the body. In this work, we developed a variety of translational nanomedicines using HA derivatives. First, we successfully commercialized a post-surgical adhesion barrier under the trade-name of Medicurtain® using the blend of high molecular weight HA and anti-coagulating hydroxyethyl starch. Second, stealth HA hydrogels were developed by the carboxyl group crosslinking for long-term tissue augmentation and osteoarthritic lubrication. Third, target specific HA-interferon conjugate was developed for the treatment of hepatitis C virus infection. Fourth, HA-protein conjugate was developed for the transdermal delivery of human growth hormone and vaccines. Fifth, supramolecular HA hydrogels were developed by host-guest chemistry for genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cell therapy. All these translational smart nanomedicines using HA will be discussed for further clinical applications. |
