Zintl phases consist of anionic frameworks of various structural motifs such as chains, planes, and nets. Nanostructures with these frameworks are expected to show interesting optical, electrical, and magnetic properties, which would not be obtained from their bulk phases. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of layered Zintl compound LiZnSb. Unlike three-dimensional structure of ZnSb, its lithiated form features unique layered structure. Interestingly, this material is a new family of two-dimensional semiconducting materials that can be exfoliated into nanosheets. We prepared a few layer-thick nanosheets via solution processing using single crystals of LiZnSb. Transmission electron microscopy study suggests that its crystals are readily exfoliated into individual layers without structural and chemical deformation. |
