Internal structure visualization and lithographic use of periodic toroidal holes in liquid crystals |

We show that perfect ordered arrays of toroidal holes covering very large areas can form in LCs. In this method, we found that an LC molecule exhibited a high density of toroidal defects arranged in an ordered array when confined within a microchannel. The tendency to form a periodic array of defects arises from a subtle competition between the boundary conditions and the elasticity of the smectic layers, subject to the hybrid homeotropic/planar anchoring conditions. Direct visualization of the inside of the toroidal domains clearly verified that the smectic layers were aligned parallel to the side wall and top surfaces, and merged in a parabolic shape on the bottom wall. Moreover, experiments in which smectic films were grown in microchannels by dynamic self-assembly using a mixture of LC molecules and fluorescent silica nanoparticles demonstrated that the toroidal domains of the smectic LCs acted as a template, trapping the nanoparticles in an ordered array. |
