Researchers have been trying to functionalize polymer-based 3-D inverse opal structures to utilize their unique 3-D geometric properties for various applications including optics, separation and piezoelectric devices. However, functionalization is still challenging due to the limited diffusion of water-based precursor solutions into the intrinsically hydrophobic 3-D inverse opal nanostructures. In this study, we demonstrated a simple polydopamine (PD) and silver nitrate dip-coating method for functionalizing polymeric 3-D inverse opal structures for use as catalytic membranes. Combining silver nanoparticles with materials with large specific area such as 3-D inverse opals, yields remarkable catalytic membrane performance, simultaneously indicating a high flux and high conversions under proper conditions. |
