Behavior of rod-like particles, imogolites, in nanocomposite gels |

Nanocomposite materials have been developed to improve the mechanical property of the system. One of the efforts is a preparation of hydrogel containing inorganic particles. We address the specific contribution of rod-like particles, imogolites, on the mechanical property of the gel. The imogolite-poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel was synthesized by using gamma-ray irradiation as nanocomposite gel with high-performed mechanical property. The structure of the hydrogel was investigated with small angle X-ray scattering and small angle neutron scattering in terms of particle concentration and the magnitude of deformation. The analysis results present polymer dominant elongation, particle orientation and stacking of particle-overlaps as structural response against the external deformation. These observations demonstrate the behavior of rod-like particle which can contribute to the relaxation of stress and maintenance of the structure against the strain. |
