제목 Design of nano-structural features in doped ceria solid electrolytes for fuel cell application
초록 Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are being especially developed as a clean and efficient power source for generating electricity from a variety of fuel. The intermediate temperature (i.e. 300 - 500C) operation of SOFCs(IT-SOFCs) means that less expensive materials can be used as interconnects, manifolds, and gas transport systems. To develop high quality solid electrolytes for next generation IT-SOFC applications, the true nano-level structure in the solid electrolytes should be taken into account. Doped ceria (CeO2) compounds are fluorite type oxides which show oxide ionic conductivity higher than yttria stabilized zirconia and scandia stabilized zirconia, in oxidizing atmosphere. As a consequence of this, considerable interest has been shown in application of these materials for IT-SOFCs. To improve the conductivity in CeO2 with trivalent metal oxide such as Gd2O3, Sm2O3, Y2O3 and so on, influence of micro-structure at atom level in the doped CeO2 on the oxide ionic conductivity has been examined in our group. Our microanalysis (i.e. selected area electron diffraction analysis, EELS analysis, High resolution TEM observation) indicates that doped CeO2 specimens have the micro-domain with ordered structure of oxygen vacancy. The big micro-domains were observed in the specimens with low conductivity. And small amount of dopant cation was aggregated into the micro-domain area. In our talk, we will show you some typical examples about the influence of nano-in-homogeneity on electrolytic properties. Also we will show you some successful results of improvement of electrolytic properties by optimization of micro-structure. Our results suggest that a combination between careful micro-analysis of microstructure in the materials and design of processing route will provide us a big chance to develop the high quality solid electrolytes in the fuel cells.
