Analysis of the Wrinkle Patterns Generated by Inflation and Contraction of Voids |

We analyzed the strain distribution in the oxide layer on an elastomer substrate when the substrate inflates or shrinks. We postulated a void inside the elastomer substrate in a simple simulation of the wrinkle patterns. For the inflation, the simulation predicts that the wrinkle at the center of the deformation is random. It propagates into labyrinthine, herringbone, radial lines with cracks in the perpendicular direction, and then radial lines without cracks as the position moves away from the center of the inflation. For the contraction, the simulation predicts only cracks near the center of the deformation, and then concentric wrinkle patterns as the position moves away from the center. We developed an experimental way to realize the inflation and contraction of spherical voids. The experimental results were in excellent agreement with the simulation results. |
