A Drug Release System Induced by Near Infrared Laser Using Alginate Microparticles Containing Melanin |

Photothermal effect generated in the specific region can be utilized for the drug release system. Melanin is an effective absorber of near-infrared (NIR) light and can provide a high photothermal conversion efficiency. We proposed alginate micropartilces containing melanin (ALG-Mel MPs) for a NIR laser induced drug release system. The temperature of ALG-Mel MPs solution at the concentration of 5 mg/mL increased to 38.1 oC from 26.0oC after NIR 808 nm irradiation at 1.5 W/cm2 for 5 min. The temperature increase was independent on the concentration of ALG-Mel MPs. After the NIR laser irradiation, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) from ALG-Mel MPs was released to 87.4±0.5% of total loaded drug for 24 h. On the other hand, 5-FU from ALG-Mel MPs without NIR laser irradiation was released to 60.8±1.5% of total loaded drug for 24 h. From these result, we anticipate that ALG-Mel MPs could be useful as a drug delivery system, releasing in target region by NIR laser irradiation. |
