Preparation and Properties of Polymer-Single Wall Carbon Nanotube Composites |
초록 |
Mechanical and electrical properties of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are predicted to be quite extraordinary. SWNTs by virtue of their high tensile strength and high modulus are considered to be the excellent candidates for reinforcing polymers and fibers. Nanocomposites of poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) and SWNTs was prepared by in situ polymerization in polyphosphoric acid using typical PBO polymerization conditions. PBO and PBO/SWNT lyotropic liquid crystalline solutions in PPA have been spun into fibers using dry-jet wet spinning. Tensile strength of the PBO/SWNT fiber containing 10 wt% SWNTs is about 50% higher than that of the control PBO fibers containing no SWNTs. Structure and morphology of these fibers have been studied using X- ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Nanocomposite fibers of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and SWNTs made by dry-jet wet spinning exhibits 100 % improvement in tensile modulus and significantly reduced thermal shrinkage as compared to the control PAN fiber. In the drawn fibers, SWNTs exhibit significantly higher orientation (determined by Raman spectroscopy) than the polyacrylonitrile orientation (determined by X-ray diffraction). SWNT anisotropy in PAN/SWNT composite fiber has also been studied using infra-red spectroscopy, and fiber morphology using SEM. Modulus of the PAN/SWNT composite fiber has been analyzed in terms of SWNT orientation. |
