Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique is very efficient for grafting from solid surfaces. ATRP allows better control over the molecular weight and distribution of the target polymer, much attention has been paid to the use of this polymerization method in the synthesis of polymer brushes from a surface. In order to prepare chiral column for HPLC, we prepared chiral stationary phase as follows. First, chiral monomer, (+)-N-(1-naphthalen-2-yl)ethyl)acrylamide, 1, was synthesized by reaction of (+)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine and acryloyl chloride. Subsequently, we synthesized the silical particle with alkyl bromide, 2, as initiator by reaction of aminated silica particle (5 μm, 100Å) and 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. We performed ATRP of 1 in the presence of 2 in methylbenzene at 60oC for 5 hrs. The obtained sample was characterized by FT-IR, XPS, and SEM. |
