In this research, silver nanoparticle-embedded polymer nanofibers are synthesized in aqueous phase via radical-mediated dispersion polymerization. Poly[2-(tert-butylaminoethyl) methacrylate] (PTBAM) was used as a polymer substrate to enhance bactericidal effect of silver nanoparticle embedded nanofibers. SEM and TEM analysis showed that silver nanoparticles of 8 nm size were situated in PTBAM nanofibers of approximately 40 nm diameters and more than 10 μm lengths. In the following antimicrobial test, silver nanoparticle-PTBAM nanofibers exhibited superior antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which represent gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria each. Furthermore, silver-nanoparticle-PTBAM nanofibers showed higher antimicrobial activity compared to silver-nanoparticle-embedded-PMMA nanofibers, due to the bactericidal properties of TBAM substrate. |
