The representative two bulk polymers, polyolefin (PO) and polystyrene (PS) were molecularly connected to form PO-block-PS by sequentially performing the coordination and the anionic polymerizations in one pot. Polyolefin block was grown on Zinc by a certain type of catalyst in terms of “Catalyzed Chain Growth”. The fast and reversible exchange of the growing polyethylene chains between the zirconium metal in the catalyst and zinc resulted formation of polyethylene units on zinc, which was utilized later for anionic polymerization by adding n-butyllithium and tmdea complex. The typical living character of the anionic polymerization may allow for the precise control of the chain length as well as the full conversion of the fed styrene. The polymers showed various properties depending on the block length and the molecular weight of each block can be controlled. |
