Non-spherical Polystyrene particle were prepared by dynamically swelling spherical particles with oil and subsequent interal phase separation process. As seed particles, micrometer-sized polystyrene particles with low molecular weight were prepared by dispersion polymerization and redispersed in the mixture of water and alcohol with sodium dodecyl sulfate or triblock copolymer of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide (F108, BASF) as stabilizer. At relatively high temperature, decane became soluble in water and alcohol so that it could diffuse through the dispersion medium into polymeric microspheres. Thereby, polymers was dissolved in decane or well mixed together. Then, by cooling down the suspension, decane was isolated inside particles and separated from polymers inside particles, in which nonspherical particles with various morphologies were produced including dimple spheres or asymmetric ellipsoids. |
