The critical adsorption point(CAP) of a polymer is defined as a liquid chromatography elution condition at which the polymer co-elutes independent of MW. The CAP condition of linear and branched chains has been investigated theoretically and by computer simulation, and the results show that if the linear and branched polymers are chemically identical, their CAP conditions are the same. However, it has not been examined by experiment critically. Branched polymers always contain chemical groups different from the repeating unit, i.e., branching points and a larger number of chain ends than linear chains. In this study, we investigated the effect of chain architecture on the CAP of 4 arm star-shaped polystyrene(PS) relative to linear PS. To examine the effects of chain architecture and functionality separately, two different linear PS, normal PS and 2 arm star-shaped PS, and 4-arm star shaped PS were used. The experimental results are then compared with the Monte Carlo simulation results. |
