Non-classical Packing Structures in Block Copolymers |

Block copolymers have been investigated as model systems to understand self-assembling materials due to their highly tunable dynamics and structures. We recently discovered a non-classical packing array of self-assembled particle-like domains in simple linear block copolymers, known as a σ-phase with a tetragonal symmetry hosting 30 lattice sites in a unit cell, one of the representative crystal structures in Frank-Kasper phases. Extensive analysis on the scattering patterns suggests the σ-phase is formed by the dynamic chain exchange process between particle domains, which increases the sphericity of domains and finally induces the symmetry breaking toward the low symmetry σ-phase from a classical body-centered cubic symmetry. We found this process is surprisingly analogous to the symmetry breaking in certain metal alloys and elements. |
