Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co- trifluoroethylene)(P(VDF-TrFE)) has been widely used for non-volatile ferroelectric polymer memory. Since the crystal structure of the polymer significantly influences the polarization performance in the capacitor, controlling both structure and orientation of the polymer crystals is of prime importance. Shear has been known as one of the most effective methods for controlling crystal structure of polymer in bulk. In order to utilize the shear method for ferroelectric polymer thin film devices, we designed a new apparatus in which thin PVDF-TrFE film less than 200 nm in thickness was successfully deformed under static shear. We demonstrate global ordering of semi-crystalline lamellae of PVDF-TrFE using simple static shear over very large area of a few centimeter squares. The orientation, systematically obtained as a function of shearing temperature, rate and film thickness, was characterized by AFM and FESEM and related to the ferroelectric polarization. |
