Sulfonyl azides, RSO2N3, are sensitive to heat and irradiation due to the facile elimination of molecular nitrogen, generating highly reactive R-N nitrene intermediate (singlet and triplet). Sulfonyl azide group is well known agent for the modification and cross-linking of various hydrocarbon compounds by C-H insertion reaction of the singlet nitrene. In previous studies, the thermal behavior of low molecular weight compounds containing the sulfonyl azide group has been well explored. However, little effort has been devoted to explore the thermal behavior of polymer containing sulfonyl azide end groups. In the presented work, we synthesized an azo-based initiator containing sulfonyl azide end groups, which was then subsequently used to prepare polystyrene end-functionalized with sulfonyl azide units. Thermal behavior of the end-functionalized polystyrene was then studied by using FT-IR and DSC. |
