Melt Dispersion of SWCNT on Polypropylene: Electrical and Mechanical Properties |

Melt processing is considered as one of the favored techniques to produce polymer nanocomposites containing carbon nanotubes (CNT). CNT has been attracted because of its conductivity and tensile strength properties for polymer composite. As low filler fraction desired, a high degree of dispersion is required in order to benefit from the intrinsic CNT properties. However, due to its high cohesive energy, dispersion of CNT in polymer melts is one of the difficult tasks. Therefore, this study select the processing factor, such as rotation speed, residence time and temperature, and evaluate each factor how the degree of CNT dispersion in polypropylene (PP) is affected using co-rotating twin-screw extruder designed for allowing the back-conveying. CNT/PP masterbatchs were produced with varying amount of CNT from 0.05 to 7 wt%. The degree of CNT dispersion was measured using 3D laser microscopy with particle analysis, electrical conductivity and melt rheometer. Mechanical property was analysed by universal testing machine (UTM). |
