Tannin-mediated Assembly of Titania Nanocrystals within Highly Porous Polymer Microspheres for Efficient UV Protection |

We introduce a facile method to prepare multi-layered titanium dioxide nanocrystals (TiO2 NCs) within porous polymer microspheres via tannin-mediated assembly. Highly open porous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres (p-MS) are prepared by a single oil-in-water emulsification. Tannic acid, one of polyphenols, is adsorbed onto the surfaces of the p-MS in an aqueous solution, which mediates a spontaneous deposition of colloidal TiO2 NCs on the surfaces of the p-MS via coordination between TiO2 and polyphenol. Multi-layered TiO2 NCs are assembled within the p-MS through layer-by-layer coatings of tannic acid and TiO2 NCs. The multi-layered TiO2-polymer p-MS show an excellent sun protection factor (SPF) for UV light screening applications. We expect that the tannin-mediated assembly can be used to develop functional inorganic-polymer hybrid microspheres in an aqueous milieus. |
