The understanding and preparation of surfaces with superhydrophilic / superhydrophobic moieties are of great interest for both fundamental research and practical application. In the present study, we report on the acid catalysed synthesis of mesoporous silica material (type of nano-materials with ordered array of uniform channels) with an aim to efficiently modify the surface silanols bearing hydrophilic functionality. The surface of mesoporous SBA-15 with open pore network was modified into a super-hydrophilic surface by a novel sulphonation route. The surface modified mesoporous silica was characterized by acid-base titration, ICP-AES, contact angle measurement, and solid-state 29Si- and 13C MAS NMR at various stages of modification. Hence it was evident that sulphonation route can be best utilized for the generation of super-hydrophilic surfaces. |
