Polymeric materials have many advantages as optical waveguides: flexibility, easy control of refractive index, and simple and low-cost fabrication process. However, most polymers consisted of hydrocarbons show a large optical loss in the near-IR region due to the vibrational overtone absorption of C-H bonds. Therefore, deuterated or fluorinated polymers have been investigated as materials for low optical loss. In this study, we synthesized copolymers of octafluoropentyl methacrylate (OFPMA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). Polymethacrylates are common materials for optical applications because of its good optical properties and easy film-forming processibility. Crosslinkable pendant groups were then introduced into the copolymers through the reactive moieties in HEMA units. Their chemical structure, thermal stability and optical properties were investigated and the UV-induced crosslinking step was also monitored. After UV irradiation, the refractive indices of copolymers ranged from 1.4500 to 1.4822, and the birefringence of copolymers were as low as 0.0002. |
