Electroactive and photoactive polymers have gained much importance recently because of the versatility of applications they afford. Such polymers are extensively used in the fabrication of light-emitting devices, electrochromic displays, laser dyes, organic transistors etc. Here we introduce a new electroactive polymer, containing N,N’-linked carbazole moiety at both ends, which is synthesized via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization by using specially designed novel initiators. In ATRP, the fast exchange reactions between the growing radical and the dormant species, leads to “living” characteristics, thereby provide a good control over molecular weight and structure of the resultant polymer. As carbazole has the ability to form charge transfer complexes due to its inherent electrodonating nature arising from the nitrogen atom through the conjugated aromatic rings, it is worthy exploring the feasibility of the new tetrafunctionalized initiators and incorporating them into high performance polymer system. |
