Recently, people are gradually concerned about environment issue, bionics, environmental-friendly or biocompatible materials. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a best candidate for these materials, because it is a typically water-soluble polymer that have linear-flexible chains, a material of no toxicity for human, and biodegradable polymer. However, comparing atactic PVA, high molecular weight (HMW) syndiotactic PVA (s-PVA) has been limited for applications in biomaterials because of water-insoluble characteristics induced by the high compactness of s-PVA chains, although s-PVA has superior properties. Therefore, to improve the water solubility of s-PVA and to maintain the basic properties of s-PVA to some extent, we may require fine control of the molecular weight as well as stereoregularity of PVA. In this study, we prepared water-soluble HMW (number-average degree of polymerization: 4,000) s-PVA with s-diad content of 58%. The physical properties of s-PVA film prepared by casting s-PVA/water solution with initial polymer concentration of 2.5 g/dl were studied.
