For effective drug therapy, it is necessary to deliver the therapeutic agents selectively to their target sites, since most drugs are associated with both beneficial and adverse effects. Among the various strategies for site-specific drug delivery, folate-receptor targeted approaches have become an attractive candidate method for smart anticancer therapy because folate is an essential vitamin for the biosynthesis of nucleotide bases and is consumed in elevated more twenty times quantities by proliferating tumor cells. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is also one of the most rapidly growing diagnostic techniques for the tumor radiotherapy by using a contrast agent such as gadopentetate dimeglumine (Gd-DTPA). In this study, we suggest that folate and Gd-DTPA conjugated PLGA-PEO micelles can be useful for the enhanced therapeutic effect on the targeted tumor sites, which require the MR imaging evaluation. |
