Effect of Additive Organic Solvent on the Synthesis of Unidirectional Alumina Nanostructures |

Aluminum oxide is most commonly used as adsorbents, catalysts and catalyst supports. In this study, the synthesis of alumina nanostructures (P-ANS) materials such as nonotubes, nonofibers, nonorods through a simple method based on the surfactant-templated hydrothermal process are reported. In the presence of 1-butanol as an organic solvent, the hydrothermal synthesis yielded mesoporous alumina molecular sieves with a wormhole-like morphology. Without adding any organic solvent, however, it gave a product with a distinct unidirectional fibrous morphology. This demonstrates a profound effect of organic solvents in hydrothermal synthesis of alumina on the morphology of the obtained products. Our procedure provides a novel single-step, low temperatures route to crystalline unidirectional alumina nanostructures (P-ANS) with thermal stability. by simply removing organic solvent from the typical synthetic mixture of mesoporous materials. The obtained structures could be varied by changing the types of employed surfactants. |
