Simultaneous sorption of Cd(II) and phenol from aqueous solutions using functionalized hybrid materials precursor to sericite |
초록 |
The pristine sericite clay was annealed and activated with hydrochloric acid in order to obtain the activated sericite. The activation causes an immense increase in specific surface area thereby provides a suitable surface structure for grafting of organo-silanes. The activated sericite (AS) was then functionalized using the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The materials were characterized by various analytical methods viz., EDX, XRD and FT-IR. Further, the material was employed for the removal of Cd(II) and phenol from aqueous solutions separately as well simultaneously. Equilibrium data obtained for Cd(II) removal was fitted well to the Langmuir and the Freundlich adsorption isotherms whereas the phenol sorption was better fittedto the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Kinetic data were best fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetic model for both pollutants. The 100 times increase in background electrolyte concentrations could not effect significantly the uptake Cd(II) and phenol. Intra particle diffusion was found to be the rate limiting step at least for the sorption of Cd(II). Various physico-chemical parametric studies suggest that the adsorbed Cd(II) formed an inner-sphere-complexes with the amino group whereas phenol were possibly sorbed through the formation of hydrogen bonding with the -OH group present in the solid materials. Moreover, simultaneous sorption studies confirmed that different binding sites are available for these two different types of sorbing species. |
