Manipulation of Photomotility of Untethered Monolithic Soft Robot via Molecular Engineering |

The azobenzene functionalized liquid crystalline polymer networks (azo-LCNs) are photoactive systems in which molecular machines are embedded in polymer networks for direct photomechanical energy transduction. This photoresponsive system allows increased degree of freefom for motility of soft robots due to wireless manipulation capability in comparison with tethered systems. In this study, we engineered the crosslink density of polymers by using azobenzene-based molecular machine with a various spacer carbon number ranging from 2 to 8. Light responsive molecular machines are self-assembled along with the reactive liquid crystal monomers in a twisted nematic geometry. followed by photopolymerization. Upon exposure to actinic light, the azo-LCNs demonstrate perpetual sofot robotic motility without any beam patterning or scanning. In this presentation, we will discuss phase behavior, thermomechanical properties and their correlation with photomotility. |
