It is known that the adsorptivity of chelating resins containing only carboxylic acid groups toward heavy metal ions is very low. In order to improve such poor adsorptivity, the carboxylic acid-enriched copolymer beads were obtained from the couplings of chlorosulfonated copolymer beads with amino acids like glycine, 3-aminopropanoic acid, 4-aminobutanoic acid, aspartic acid or glutamic acid, etc. Accordingly, the effects of the chemical and physical structure of the copolymer beads containing carboxylic acid groups on the adsorption of heavy metal ions were investigated. It was found that poly(St-co-DVB)-based copolymer beads with carboxylic acid groups showed good adsorption toward heavy metal ions Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ as well as Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+. |
