A selective and sensitive system based on visible and pH responsive carbon dot (TiO2-CD) with membrane and nucleus targeting ability was applied for theragnosis. The interaction between TiO2 loaded dopa decyl (CD-D) and zwitterionic carbon dot (CD-Z) promoted fluorescent quenching due to the boronate ester formation at neutral pH. At acidic pH, the FL intensity recovered due to the cleavage of the boronate ester bonds, causing the disruption of FRET effect to liberate different carbon dots for tumor selectivity and therapy. The CD-D penetrate the hydrophobic sites of the cell membrane after visible-light irradiation due to the change in the affinity based on the photocatalytic effect of TiO2 loaded in the CD-D. The visible and pH responsive carbon dot demonstrated the potential in theragnosis with its biocompatibility, high sensitivity, selectivity in cancer therapy by mean of PTT treatment.
