Immune-controllable surface immobilization of neuronal cell membrane for integration of devices with neural tissues |

At the interface of an implanted neural probe, inflammatory responses limit the recording stability. To prevent this negative actions, we fabricated titanium substrate covered with cell membranes extracted from differentiated PC12 cells to induce the surface localization of L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM), which promotes neurite outgrowth and impedes astrocyte growth. The surface modification was investigated by FTIR, confocal microscopy and FRAP assay. The neuronal cell membrane modified surfaces prevented protein adsorption. Further, in vitro cell study revealed encouraging results in terms of adhesion and differentiation of neuronal cells. Moreover, different behaviors of astrocytes from those of neuronal cells were also observed. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that this system would act as an efficient tool for modulating the immune response of neural probes.
