Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely investigated, and is considered as a benchmark semiconductor material, which possesses suitable band structure for photoelectrochemical cell water splitting. Although, titanium dioxide has favorable band structure for water splitting, there are some drawbacks. These include its large band gap and electron-hole recombination. Here we report an approach of chemical reduction as a simple and effective strategy to enhance the performance of TiO2 nanotubes for PEC water splitting application. Vertically aligned one-dimensional (1D) titanium dioxide arrays were synthesized on FTO via hydrothermal method and chemical etching process. These tubes were chemically reduced, and we observed an enhanced PEC water splitting performance. |
