The scheduling problem which contains batch and continuous operations is known to be among the most difficult industrial scheduling problems. The short-term scheduling problem for manufacturing of different grade polymers is addressed in this research. Since the stripping column and dryers in the polymerization process are operated in a continuous mode and the reactors in a batch mode, the scheduling of this process is a problem with mixture of continuous and batch operation units. The polymerization process is a sequential multipurpose plant. In this paper a concept of the mathematical model proposed by Moon and Hrymak (I&EC, Res., 1999, 38, 2144) is used and extended to scheduling the production sequence in each unit. In the mathematical model, it is considered that the processing amount of each reactor depends on the customer’s order. The proposed scheduling model has been applied to a large polymerization process to verify its efficiency. |
