Heavy metals removal from industrial wastewater by activated carbon derived from waste plastic |

In this work, activated carbon (AC) prepared from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was used as adsorbent to remove Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ ions from industrial wastewater. The AC-PET produced was chemically activated with potassium hydroxide. The influence of the impregnation ratio on textural properties were evaluated. The overall porosity was improved with increasing impregnation ratio. In order to estimate the heavy metals adsorption capabilities of the AC-PET, the adsorption equilibrium isotherm and kinetic studies were rigorously evaluated. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm of heavy metals on the AC-PET could be represented by Sips isotherm model. The pore diffusion model was employed for determine the internal diffusion coefficient and the results was in good agreement with experimental kinetic data. Overall results also showed that activated carbon prepared from waste plastic can be efficiently used as low-cost alternative for removal of heavy metal ions. |
