Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to fuel offers interesting prospects for the storage and transport of solar energy. The challenges are realizing a low-cost, readily synthesized stable photocatalytic material. Herein, a mesoporous p/n-type heterojunction material, CuXO–TiO2, is synthesized via annealing of Cu/Cu2O nanocomposites mixed with a TiO2 precursor (TiCl4). This experimental approach, in which two materials of various band gaps are combined, simultaneously offers greater optical absorption and opportunities for rapid charge separation due to the material's intrinsic p-n heterojunction properties. This heterostructured photocatalyst exhibits improved photocatalytic activity. By CO2 reduction of the optimal sample without the use of metal cocatalysts, an astonishing methane yield of 221.63 ppm g-1 h-1 is achieved. |
