A New Polymer Electrolyte Membrane for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells |

In order to prepare a novel polymer electrolyte membrane for direct methanol fuel cell, a versatile monomer (vinylbenzyl chloride) having a reactive chloromethyl group, was first grafted onto a poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) film by a simultaneous irradiation process, and then the prepared poly(vinylbenyzl chloride)-grafted FEP (FEP-g-PVBC) film was converted to the desired membranes, poly(vinylbenyzl sulfonic acid)-grafted FEP (FEP-g-PVBSA) membrane via subsequent chemical treatments. The properties of the resulting FEP-g-PVBSA membrane, such as ion exchange capacity, proton conductivity, water uptake, methanol uptake and methanol crossover were investigated. |
