Recently hydrogels based on both natural and synthetic polymer are being increasingly recognized and extensive studies have found widespread applications in bioengineering, biomedicine, food industry, water purification, and separation process. In this work, it was interesting to combine a natural pH-sensitive alginate and a synthetic poly(aspartic acid) to modify the gel properties of the component polymers. Biodegradable homo and composite hydrogels based on poly(aspartic acid) and alginate were prepared by crosslinking using calcium chloride in aqueous medium. The characterization of these IPN type composite gels, their swelling behavior, and also model drug release and dye adsorption properties from aqueous solutions are investigated. |
